What We Do
Why Early Matters
Children can be diagnosed as early as 18 months, but the average age of diagnosis in Minnesota is ~4 years 9 months. Earlier evaluation can open doors to earlier supports and better outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What ages do you serve for evaluations?- We provide autism spectrum disorder evaluations and developmental screening services for children approximately 18 months through 6 years old.
- What is a CMDE, and why is it important?- CMDE stands for Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Evaluation. It’s the evaluation process used to determine medical necessity for EIDBI (Early Intensive Developmental & Behavioral Intervention) services. Undergoing a CMDE through MAPS helps to open eligibility for these intervention supports.
- What happens during a diagnostic evaluation?- The evaluation includes input from caregivers, clinical observations, assessment tools, and a review of medical history and any previous evaluations. We use standardized instruments (e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R, Vineland, etc.) depending on the child’s needs. If appropriate and possible, we include IQ or developmental testing, and if needed the CMDE to help with eligibility for EIDBI.
- Where are your offices located, and do you offer flexible scheduling?- Our primary evaluation offices are in Bloomington (7901 Xerxes Ave S, Suite 110), Waite Park (110 2nd St S suite 300), and Northfield, MN. Along with testing, we also provide ABA services at our Northfield location: 1403 Heritage Dr, Ste A, Northfield, MN 55057. - We offer flexible appointment times—contact us to check current availability.
- Does MAPS serve adults or provide adult autism diagnostic services?- No, at present MAPS does not provide diagnostic services for adults. Our focus is on early childhood (roughly 18 months to 6 years) evaluations.
- Is insurance accepted, and what should I check before scheduling?View Accepted Insurance- Yes, MAPS accepts a range of insurers. Before scheduling, it’s helpful to verify with your insurance provider whether they cover psychological or autism diagnostic evaluations, and whether a CMDE is required. Please contact us or check your plan to understand your benefits and any out-of-pocket costs.
- If my child has already been diagnosed elsewhere, can you re-evaluate or update their existing evaluation?- Yes — re-evaluations are possible if you need updated documentation, a fresh evaluation for county services, or to include the CMDE for eligibility under EIDBI. We’ll work with your prior records.
- How long does the evaluation process take, and what should we expect?- Evaluations usually involve several steps: intake (collecting history, documents), in-person assessment, scoring/report writing, and final feedback. The time from intake to feedback depends on appointment availability, whether all required information is on hand, etc. We’ll walk you through what to prepare and what the timeline will look like once you begin.
